Yarn and Fabric Retail Associate
Black Mountain Yarn Shop is seeking a Yarn and Fabric-focused Retail Associate to work in our shop in historic downtown Black Mountain.
BMYS offers hand-dyed yarns, needles, project bags, crochet hooks, fabric, roving and so much for for fiber artists everywhere.
Our store hours are as follows:
Sun/Mon: CLOSED
Tues: 12pm-8pm (knit night from 6-8pm at the shop)
Wed - Fri: 12pm-6pm
Sat: 10am-4pm
Retail Associate Responsibilities include:
- Assisting customers with yarn / fiber / accessory selection by reccomending the appropriate weight and amount of yarn, color combinations, etc.
- Looking up patterns and determine the appropriate amount of positive ease, yarn type and amount required, etc.
- Provide technical guidance and answer pattern questions.
- Pull items from shelves and from storage to fulfill online orders.
- Operate Point of Sale, maintain the cash drawer and make change while completing purchases for customers.
- Assist with inventory, stocking, and merchandising.
- Assist with special events such as classes, trunk shows, and special sales.
- Package items and print shipping labels to complete online orders.
- Print labels, label skeins of yarn, and assist with organizing new inventory when it arrives.
- Shop maintenance duties such as tidying, taking out trash, breaking down boxes, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Black Mountain Yarn Shop is located in a two-story historic building that does not have an elevator. Applicants must be able to traverse one flight of stairs multiple times per shift, and must be able to carry up to 20 lbs. up and down the stairs at times. Stocking and inventory often require bending, squatting and reaching over your head at times. Our team are on their feet almost the entire time we are open, so applicants must be able to stand for long periods of time as well.
- Candidates must be available for work during a significant amount of our open hours.
- Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from our shop location.
Other Experience That We Value:
- Since there is a technical aspect to this role, we have a strong preference for candidates that are experienced knitters / sewists / crocheters that can read / interpret patterns and offer coaching / guidance to our customers.
- Previous retail or customer service experience is strongly preferred.
- Our shop should be a fun and welcoming place for all fiber artists, so candidates should have a welcoming, open personality and enjoy working with customers from all walks of life.
- Previous merchandising, inventory, shipping or stocking experience is valuable in this role as well.

Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour

Marketing and Shipping Associate
Black Mountain Yarn Shop is seeking a Shipping and Marketing Associate to assist us with packaging online orders, creating marketing material (Canva, etc.), adding/editing products on our website, and with other general duties.
This is a non-customer-facing role.
The Shipping and Marketing Associate will largely focus on getting the Shop prepared to open its doors to the public each day and on assisting with any of our Social Media and Marketing needs.

Shipping and Marketing Associate Responsibilities include:
- The Shipping and Marketing Associate will largely focus on getting the Shop prepared to open its doors to the public each day.
- Shipping, restocking and tidying of the Shop should be completed first, unless otherwise directed.
- Pull items from shelves and from upstairs storage to fulfill online orders.
- Assist with inventory, restocking, and merchandising when needed.
- Assist with setup and organization of special events such as classes, trunk shows, and special sales.
- Provide customer service assistance and operate POS system when needed.
- Utilize Canva and other programs to create merchandising material.
- Create kits and new products on the Shopify platform.
- Assist with social media posts.
- Write occasional blog posts and add them to our website.
- Package items and print shipping labels to complete online orders.
- Print labels, label skeins of yarn, and assist with organizing new inventory when it arrives.
- Shop maintenance duties such as tidying, taking out trash, breaking down boxes, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
